Olympics 2008

Men's Football:

China playing New Zealand now, China 0 - New Zealand 1

New Zealand down to 10 men still can take the lead against China.

Think the Chinese footballers lost a lot of $$ on SSE, no mood to play, maybe they vested a lot in Cosco?

Hee. This evening's Opening Ceremony will be a massive spectacular event. Tons (literally) of fireworks and performance that will make NDP look like child's play. A must watch event on TV . Anyway you pay nothing whereas the spectators there pay $45k USD to be there.

Lee HY's National Day Message is at 745pm before the Games Ceremony programme which will start right after at 8pm. Did PM Lee adjust his "slot" to make way for Olympics? I thought most political leaders will be there at the opening incl Singapore, so it seems like our PM is not going? Unless he give the message over from BeiJing? :)

Just watched Phelps winning the 200m freestyle in WR time.

His strokes are somewhat slower than the rest... but watch his speed in the water... much faster than the rest. In the end, he was one whole body length ahead!

Have u noticed....

1. At all of the games I have seen so far like badminton, table tennis, gym and swimming and probably everywhere else at the court side or pool side, you do not see any sponsors logo on the boards? Its just the same blue background with the words Beijing Olympics on it. I would have thought the host would capitalise on the billions of viewers by accepting sponsorships on the billboards... eg Mastercard, Coke, Toyota or even.... Synear. Heee...

2. The women swimmers in suits, wear a lot more than the runners who are in bikinis.

Interesting observation. Just thinking aloud here - could it actually have been arranged as a means for location-/broadcaster-based advertising? In other words, the broadcasting companies "superimpose" their own advertisements onto these boards as they're screened, kinda' like the "green field/background" (not sure I'm using the right term) techniques used in filming. This way, each broadcaster can project ads for their sponsors.

Not sure if the technology is there yet, as there will be quite a fair bit of split-second projections (then again, maybe not, if the camera angles are fixed). But that's a possible angle to look at it, methinks.

Thought good to find out more abt the Table Tennis women rankings....

China has the Top 5 players in the world

Li Jiawei is No 6 in the world.
Wang Yue Gu (our plumb player) is No. 7
Feng , the heroin last night is No. 9

The 3 Kor players were ranked 11, 22, 26 respectively.

===============================

1. SGP has clearly the 2nd best women team in the world
2. On paper, except for the Kor's No. 11 player, the other 2 Koreans are no where near ranking of our SGP player
3. The No 11 player is the one that beat our Li JiaWei.
4. Of the 3 SGP players, JiaWei looked to be most vulnerable emotionally. Seems quite affected whenever she lose a bad point.

Tomorrow SUNDAY evening... 2 events clash.

1. MediaCorp will broadcast Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's National Day Rally Speech "live" on August 17 from 6.45pm.

Mr Lee will deliver the first part of his speech in Malay, followed by Mandarin. His two-hour long speech in English will begin at 8pm. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/ ... 74/1/.html

2. Table Tennis LIVE at 730pm I think... correct?

Hee hee. Not entirely unexpected. Olympics timing cannot be changed one, so our National Day Rally had to change.

Read today's headline, NDR English speech will change to tomorrow instead.

Anyone watched the 100m dash at the Olympics last night?

Amazing win by a big distance. Looked to me like the "Phelps" of the track & field. He had no match. And the best part abt Bolt's WR win? He slowed down at the last 10 metres !!!!!!!!!!!! Imagine if he chiong the entire 100m... the timing is likely to be better.

Blew the field away; scary how good he is. Hope this isn't another Ben Johnson episode - still remember how overawed I was when Ben Johnson broke the 9.9 barrier at the Olympics... only for it to be disclosed later that it was performance-enhanced.

When someone is so good that he beats everyone else with time for a cup of kopi to spare, it (unfortunately) will rouse suspicion.

Bloody good run though - awesome entertainment. Still can't shake the image from my head when Bolt ran in the heats, and turned his head to the right a couple of times to salute the fans as he cruised to the line. :D

TT Final last night.

Anyone found JiaWei grins when she loses a point irritating?
There u have the Chinese players showing a concentrated deadpan look.
But Jia Wei no, she acted like a media butterfly last night while playing.

The Chinese gals are admirable, esp Zhang. They did the task w/o fanfare and reserved their emotions until after the last point was won.

Here are the top nine comments made by NBC sports commentators during the last Olympics that they would like to take back

1. Softball announcer: 'If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again.'

2. Dressage commentator: 'This is really a lovely horse and I speak from personal experience since I once mounted her mother.'

3. Paul Hamm, Gymnast: 'I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father.'

4. Boxing Analyst: 'Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them really that serious.'

5. Weightlifting commentator: 'This is Gregoriava from Bulgaria . I saw her snatch this morning during her warm up and it was amazing.'

6. Basketball analyst: 'He dribbles a lot and the opposition doesn't like it. In fact you can see it all over their faces.'

7. At the rowing medal ceremony: 'Ah, isn't that nice, the wife of the IOC president is hugging the cox of the British crew.'

8. Soccer commentator: 'Julian Dicks is everywhere. It's like they've got eleven Dicks on the field.'

9. Tennis commentator: 'One of the reasons Andy is playing so well is that, before the final round, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them . . .. Oh my God, what have I just said?'
