Bar Stool Economics

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten
comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would
go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the
arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. "Since you are
all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your
daily beer by $20." Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the
first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what
about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the
$20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?' They realized
that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from
everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up
being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be
fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he
proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued
to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to
compare their savings.

"I only got a dollar out of the $20,"declared the sixth man. He pointed to
the tenth man," but he got $10!" "Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth
man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more
than I!" "That's true!!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10
back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!" "Wait a
minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at
all. The system exploits the poor!"

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat
down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill,
they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between
all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors, is how
our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most
benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being
wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start
drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

What a difference a sad event in someone's
life makes.

GEORGE CARLIN (His wife recently died...)
Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - comedian
of the 70's and 80's - could write something so
very eloquent...and so very appropriate.

A Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we
have taller buildings
but shorter tempers, wider Freeways ,but
narrower viewpoints. We spend more,
but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less.

We have bigger houses and smaller families,
more conveniences, but less time.
We have more degrees but less sense,
more knowledge, but less judgment,
more experts, yet more problems,
more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too
recklessly, laugh too little,
drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late,
get up too tired, read too little,
watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but
reduced our values. We talk too much,
love too seldom, and hate too often.
We 've learned how to make a living,
but not a life. We've added years
to life not life to years.

We've been all the way to the moon and
back, but have trouble crossing the street to
meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer
space but not inner space. We've done larger
things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the
soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our
prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We
plan more, but accomplish less.

We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We
build more computers to hold more information,
to produce more copies than ever, but we
communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow
digestion, big men and small character,
steep profits and shallow relationships.
These are the days of two incomes but more
divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable
diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands,
overweight bodies, and pills that do
everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.

It is a time when there is much in the
showroom window and nothing in the stockroom.
A time when technology can bring this letter
to you, and a time when you can
choose either to share this insight, or to just
hit delete...

Remember; spend some time with your loved
ones, because they are not going to be around
forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who
looks up to you in awe,
because that little person soon will grow up
and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next
to you, because that is
the only treasure you can give with your heart
and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner
and your loved ones,
but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace
will mend hurt when it
comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the
moment for someday that person
will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give
time to share the
precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths
we take, but by the
moments that take our breath away.

If you don't send this to at least 8
people....Who cares?

George Carlin

What Makes People Successful
by Dr Alka Prakash

HAVE you often wondered: What drives successful people?

Take a look around and talk to your friends and seniors who are very successful. You will see some commonalties in their behavioural patterns, though they belong to quite diverse fields.

All of them have adopted certain values which have proved vital for their success.

They take initiative

It is evident that successful people take initiative. When they find that something needs to be done, they just do it, instead of waiting around for someone to tell them what to do.

They believe that responsibility is taken, not given. They size up immediately what has to be done, sooner or later, and do it with pleasure, thus enhancing their reputation.

They are self-motivated

Successful people are passionate about the things that they do, especially when they believe in what they are doing.

They are motivated by their own satisfaction and the joy that they get from doing their work, rather than an extrinsic reward.

They work hard even when no one is watching and they throw themselves into their assignments. Having “fire in the belly” is a prerequisite for success.

They do not fear failure

Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, once said: “When one door closes, another opens but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”

Failures and disappointments in life are inevitable. It is the failure that teaches us much more than the success, and successful people know the lesson so well.

They pick themselves up after a fall and try again with more determination and commitment, capitalising on the lessons learned from each failure. They associate with those they can learn from and enjoy the company of those who appreciate their achievement.

They give respect to others

Daniel Goleman wrote about the importance of emotional intelligence and described successful people as those with high emotional intelligence quotient (EQ), and not just high intelligence quotient (IQ).

Having good IQ often gets a person what he wants but it is really the EQ that keeps him there and helps him flourish.

People who are successful are polite to everyone and treat others with respect. As respect is mutual, by giving respect to others, they command respect for themselves.

They never complain

Another important attribute of successful persons is that they never complain. They sincerely believe in the saying that complaints will always discredit you.

Complaints provoke insolence and encourage others to behave like those we complain about. It is better to praise others and win favour with them.

So instead of complaining about a situation, successful people always find ways to deal with it. In a nutshell, take initiative in doing things and be passionate about them.

Do not be afraid to fail, get up and start again graciously. When you do so, success will come to you.

John Templeton died yesterday at the age of 95.

Quite from BT Today... quite inspiring to me (coz I have also a lot of stocks in that below $1 category, hehehe)

"Mr Templeton's knack for investing was evident as early as 1939, when, at the start of World War II, he borrowed money to buy 100 shares each in 104 companies that sold for US$1 per share or less, including 34 companies that were in bankruptcy.

According to the foundation's website, only four of those 100 turned out to be worthless, and Mr Templeton made large profits on the others after holding each for an average of four years. In 1999, Money magazine called him 'arguably the greatest global stock picker of the century'.

This is good... read it.

Author: Stephen Covey
Discover the 90/10 Principle.

It will change your life (at least the way you react to situations).

What is this principle? 10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react.

What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us.

We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic.

We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%.

How? ……….By your reaction.

You cannot control a red light. but you can control your reaction. Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react.
Let's use an example.

You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just happened.

What happens next will be determined by how you react.

You curse.

You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus.

Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit.

After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home.

When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.

Why? …. Because of how you reacted in the morning.

Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?
The answer is “D".

You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.

Here is what could have and should have happened.

Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, "Its ok honey, you just need to be more careful next time". Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having.

Notice the difference?

Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different.
Why?
Because of how you REACTED.

You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your reaction.

Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle. If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge. Let the attack roll off like water on glass. You don't have to let the negative comment affect you!

React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out etc.

How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic? Do you lose your temper? Pound on the steering wheel? A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off) Do you curse? Does your blood pressure skyrocket? Do you try and bump them?

WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work? Why let the cars ruin your drive?

Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.

You are told you lost your job.

Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out. Use your worrying energy and time into finding another job.

The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take outpour frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on.

Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger. Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse.
Now you know the 90-10 principle. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results. You will lose nothing if you try it. The 90-10 principle is incredible. Very few know and apply this principle.

The result?
Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache. We all must understand and apply the 90/10 principle.
It CAN change your life!!!
Enjoy….

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 :The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your own room..

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time..

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

"One should never permit speculative ventures to run into investments. Don't become an Involuntary Investor."

Investors often take tremendous losses for no other reason than that their
stocks are bought and paid for. How often have we all heard an investor
say: “I don’t have to worry about fluctuations or margin calls. I never speculate
in the market. When I buy stocks, I buy them for an investment, and
if they go down, eventually they will come back.”

But unhappily for such investors, many stocks bought at a time when
they were deemed good investments have later met with drastically
changed conditions. These such so-called investment stocks frequently
become purely speculative. Some go out of existence altogether. The original
investment evaporates into thin air along with the investor’s capital.
This is due to the failure to realize that so-called investments may be
called upon in the future to face a new set of conditions that would jeopardize
the earning capacity of the stock, which was originally bought for a
permanent investment.

By the time the investor learns of this changed situation, the value
of his investment has most likely already greatly depreciated. The stock
market moves in future time, not present time. Therefore, the so-called
investor must guard his capital account, just as the successful trader
does in his speculative ventures. Then, those who like to call themselves
investors will not be forced to become unwilling investors—nor
will trust fund accounts and mutual funds accounts depreciate so much
in their value.

“It never was my thinking that made the big money for me. It always was my sitting. Got that? My sitting tight! It is no trick at all to be right on the market. You always find lots of early bulls in bull markets and early bears in bear markets. I've known many men who were right at exactly the right time, and began buying or selling stocks when prices were at the very level which should show the greatest profit. And their experience invariably matched mine - that is, they made no real money out of it. Men who can both be right and sit tight are uncommon.” – Legendary speculator Jesse Livermore, “Reminiscences of a Stock Operator” by Edwin Lefevre, 1923

20 Life Lessons A Wise Man Would Share

Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak louder than the words. It is making the time when there is none. Coming through time after time after time, year after year after year. Commitment is the stuff character is made of; the power to change the face of things. It is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism. – Abraham Lincoln

GUIDE TO A BETTER LIFE-GOOD ONE!

Posted: Thu Sep 16, 2010 10:29 am

This is amazing, he died of pancreatic cancer in 2008, but wrote a book
‘The last lecture” before then, one of the bestsellers in 2007. What a
legacy to leave behind…
In a letter to his wife Jai and his children, Dylan, Logan, and Chloe, he
wrote this beautiful "guide to a better life" for his wife and children to
follow.
May you be blessed by his insight.

-----------------------

POINTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

Personality:
1. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey
is all about.
2. Don't have negative thoughts of things you cannot control. Instead
invest your energy in the positive present moment
3. Don't over do; keep your limits
4. Don't take yourself so seriously; no one else does
5. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip
6. Dream more while you are awake
7 . Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner of his/her
mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.
8 . Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others.
9 . Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present
10 . No one is in charge of your happiness except you
11 . Smile and laugh more
12 . You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

Community:

1 3 . Call your family often
14 . Spend time with people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6
15 . Try to make at least three people smile each day
16 . What other people think of you is none of your business
17 . Your job will not take care of you when you are sick. Your family and
friends will. Stay in touch.

Life:
20 . Do the right things
21 . However good or bad a situation is, it will change
22 . No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up
23 . The best is yet to come
24 . Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful
25 . When you awake alive and healthy in the morning, thank your parents
for giving you this life, sing a song and be contented with everything,
like the birds who stride the sky!

While you practice all of the above, share this knowledge with the people
you love, people you hate,
people you play with, people you work with and people you live with.
Not only will it enrich YOUR life, but also that of those around you.
